Synopsis
In #1-21, I try to approach my intercultural experiences during my stays in China in 1987 and 2004: The distanced view from two hotel room windows into the street canyons of Shanghai and Wusi provides a (supposed) overview where experiencing everyday life in China at eye level often does not. This oscillation between distance and proximity creates a multi-layered and dense network that, changing in space and time, loses itself in the darkness.
This immersion as well as a diving into ‚the other context’ can be seen as prerequisites for the demands of the French sinologist and philosopher François Jullien for a sentient-intuitive understanding. In Der Umweg über China - ein Ortswechsel des Denkens he describes how the change of perspective between Western and Eastern thinking makes it possible to view one's own cultural context, shaped by Greek philosophy, from a different standpoint - and to put it into perspective in order to be able to approach one another.
